Oppo could be interested in creating a phone with removable camera modules

Unlike building your own PC, when it comes to smartphones, you’re pretty much stuck with whatever the manufacturer has given you. This means that we might have to make compromises when choosing our handset, like maybe we like the design of a phone but the display is too small.

Or maybe we like a phone’s battery size but the rest of the specs are subpar. That being said, it seems that Oppo is exploring the idea of creating a phone with removable camera modules, where the idea is that this camera module can be removed and potentially used as a standalone camera powered by its own battery.

It’s an interesting idea, although Oppo would not be the first company to try and make modular phones a thing. We’ve seen Motorola attempt it in the past with Project Ara, only for it to fall flat, and we’ve also seen LG try to make modular attachments, although that hasn’t exactly panned out the way that they had hoped either.

It’s easy to see why such a system might be hard to adopt. This is because no one really relishes the idea of having to carry around separate modules for a phone that could be easily lost or damaged. That being said, this is only a patent so it’s hard to tell if Oppo might actually make it a reality.
