MediaTek challenges Apple with new chipsets designed for Chromebooks

While ARM-based chipsets used in laptops aren’t exactly new, it seems that MediaTek could be looking to challenge Apple in that space. So much so that the company has announced its brand new MT8912 and MT8915 chipsets that have been designed for Chromebooks in mind, along with a brand new Dimensity 700 5G chipset designed for mass market smartphones.

MediaTek MT8912 and MT8915

With these new chipsets, MediaTek is claiming that they’ll be able to offer a dedicated audio digital signal processor and also enable ultra-low power voice wakeup, which means that users could in theory wake their laptops up using their voice and also to power digital assistants like Google Assistant.

MediaTek is also boasting that these chipsets will allow for a variety of camera configurations thanks to its HDR image signal processor, which means that Chromebook manufacturers could utilize cameras designed for smartphones and put them inside laptops, thus potentially boosting the webcam capabilities of these computers.

With the MT8195, MediaTek has built this chipset on the 6nm process and it features an octa-core CPU utilizing the big.LITTLE architecture with four ARM Cortex-A78 cores for more intensive purposes, and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores to handle background tasks and to help with lower-intensity applications that could improve battery life.

As for the MT8192, this is a slightly less powerful chipset with four ARM Cortex-A76 cores and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores. Both chipsets will feature the use of ARM’s Mali-G57 GPU, with support for 4K HDR video decoding, PCI-Express Gen 3 and USB 3.2 Gen 1.

MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G

While Qualcomm does provide the majority of chipsets to Android smartphones in the market today, MediaTek thinks that they might have a solution for Android handset makers who don’t want to use Qualcomm’s technology or pay for licensing. The Dimensity 700 5G has been designed for all kinds of devices, ranging from flagships to budget devices, with the common denominator being support for 5G.

The Dimensity 700 5G will support up to 90Hz displays and Full HD+ resolutions, 64MP camera sensors, and also support for a multitude of digital assistants ranging from Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, and also digital assistants made by Chinese companies like Baidu and Tencent.
