One of the Huawei Mate 40’s features could be wide-angle lens distortion correction

Wide-angle lenses are awesome because they can create breathtaking landscape photos or exaggerate certain things. The problem with shooting in wide-angle all the time is that depending on the distance of your subject, sometimes the corners of the image can look a bit distorted.

This is known as barrel distortion and is a pretty common problem with wide-angle lenses and typically these need to be corrected in post-processing, but that won’t be an issue with the upcoming Huawei Mate 40. The company has recently posted a teaser video in which they suggest that with the Mate 40, one of the camera features we can expect is the ability to automatically correct distortion when shooting at wide-angles.

The teaser video is a bit exaggerated, but the idea is that the sides of your photos can be corrected automatically so that your photos don’t end up looking weird. We suppose to the untrained eye, unless you’re shooting with a fisheye lens, barrel distortion isn’t always that obvious, but it would be a nice feature to have.

Given that smartphone cameras have an added advantage over traditional cameras thanks to all the software processing, this could take out a lot of the guesswork and also post-processing needed. The Huawei Mate 40 is currently scheduled for a launch on the 22nd of October, so check back with us then for the official details.
