Best Crossword Games for Android & iPhone

Crossword games are a great way to keep your mind active and entertained while also improving your vocabulary. While there are plenty of great traditional crossword games you can play on your smartphone, developers have gotten quite inventive over the past few years, mixing up the formula to deliver gaming experiences that are a lot more fun and addictive.

Below is a list of some of the best crossword games for Android and iPhone. If you know of a title or two that should be on the list, make sure you jump into the comment and let us know.

Wordscapes

Wordscapes is another game from the creators of Spell Blitz and other popular word games. Instead of simply creating a list of words from the letters provided, you use those letters to fill a blank crossword puzzle. This can easy for some words but as you progress through the over 6000 levels, the more letters there are and the harder it becomes to fill the crossword. Each level has beautiful images of nature such as oceans and mountains.

Alphabear: Words Across Time

Alphabear is another unique take on the Word Game genre. Letters appear around a bear and it’s your job to create words and help the bear grow. The bigger the word the more the points. However, you need to be selective as to the letters you use. If a letter stays on the board too long, it becomes a rock and that’s one less letter available to use. Complete puzzles to earn bears for your collection. The bears in your collection give various bonuses including additional points, time extension, and game board modifications.

Typeshift

Typeshift is from the creators of SpellTower and is a new anagram puzzle. You are presented with a few words stacked on each other and your job is to unscramble them to make words. Move letters in each column up and down to spell a word in the center row. Typeshift includes global challenges and weely puzzles with the puzzles becoming increasingly difficult as the week progresses.

Four Letters

Four Letters sounds like the name of a simple game but it can also be nerve-racking. You are given four letters and your goal is to make a word out of it as fast as you can. Complete the word and four new letters appear. Repeat the process as often as you can until the timer runs out. The game tracks various statistics for you such as how long you’ve played and a dictionary detailing the words you’ve created. Keep an eye on the leaderboard and see where you compare against others around the world.

Word Shapes is by the same team that brings you Wordscapes earlier in our list. Instead of filling out a crossword with letters provided, Word Shapes plays as a word search game. Each level has a theme and the goal is to find words fitting that theme. The trick is that the letter order can go in any direction. It’s rare to see a word in a straight line. Pay attention though as words go not only left to right but right to left also, each forming a unique shape.
