For a while it seemed like Microsoft’s smartphone ambitions had died when they stopped making Windows Phone devices, and when they sold Nokia’s phone business to HMD Global, but last year, the company unveiled the Surface Duo, a dual screen Android smartphone that will be launching later this year.
So the question is, when will the phone launch and which carrier will be offering it? According to leakster Evan Blass, it seems that AT&T could be it. Blass claims that there are ongoing talks between Microsoft and AT&T for a partnership that could see the phone launch under the carrier.
It is unclear if this will be an exclusive deal where only AT&T will get to sell the phone, or if the talks between Microsoft and AT&T is just the start. Exclusive carrier deals used to be pretty popular in the past, like when AT&T was the first and only carrier in the US to sell the iPhone. These days, such as exclusivity deals are no longer as common, but given the Surface Duo’s unique nature, maybe other carriers aren’t quite as willing to take a chance with it.
At the moment there is still no official word on when the Surface Duo will be launching, but last we checked, Microsoft was planning to release it during the holiday season, so hopefully we’ll have more details in the coming months.
