Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5.0 will juice your phone up in minutes
We’re not sure if the day will ever come where we will start seeing smartphone makers squeeze larger batteries into their devices. In the meantime, companies have been finding ways around that by introducing fast charging solutions, like Qualcomm who have announced Quick Charge 5.0.
Qualcomm kind of led the charge (pun intended) on fast charging solutions when they announced Quick Charge years ago, although with version 5.0, it could possibly be the fastest commercially available charging solution to date. The company claims that Quick Charge 5.0 will offer 100+W charging and the ability to go from 0-50% in just 5 minutes (based on a 4,500mAh battery).
As we have pointed out in the past, the rapid charging of your smartphone’s battery is great if you need to juice up quickly, but it can be bad for the battery’s overall health due to potential excessive heat. With Quick Charge 5.0, Qualcomm claims that it offers better thermal management that is up to 10C cooler compared to its predecessor.
According to Qualcomm, this is achieved by using a dual-stack battery design. The idea is that each battery can only accept a certain amount of energy being passed through them, so by having two smaller batteries charging in parallel, it will charge faster.

That being said, we’re not sure which companies will be taking Qualcomm up on their offer. We’ve already seen how other handset makers such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus come up with their own charging solutions, but it could still be worth keeping an eye out for in the future.
