In 2021, we expect that flagship smartphones will use Qualcomm’s next-gen chipset, the Snapdragon 875 chipset. This will be the successor to this year’s Snapdragon 865. While we expect that there will be various improvements in performances and efficiency, one of the changes will also be in price.
According to a recent report, it seems that the prices of the Snapdragon 875 will be considerably more expensive than the Snapdragon 865 chipset. Based on the report, the “set” version of the Snapdragon 875 will cost $250, versus the Snapdragon 865 which is said to cost $150, meaning it’ll be more expensive by $100.
The standalone chipset will also be rumored to cost $130, whereas the Snapdragon 865 is said to cost $80. It has been suggested that these might not necessarily be the final prices as there could also be licensing fees involved. We’re also not sure how this will impact the final price of smartphones.

This is because apart from cost of components, the final price of a phone takes into account R&D, marketing, design, and so on, but ultimately the increase in the price of components will no doubt lead to a more expensive phone. We’re pretty sure handset makers will not be absorbing these costs, so if you are looking forward to new flagship smartphones in 2021, be prepared to pay more for it.
