If there is one advantage to using headphones over a pair of speakers, it is that headphones are better at creating sound separation. This means that audio coming from the left or right channel would be more obvious when wearing headphones versus listening through a set of speakers.
This audio separation also helps create a more immersive effect, but for OnePlus users, it seems that a rather mysterious glitch is messing this rather simple feature up. According to multiple user reports, it appears that when a pair of headphones are connected to OnePlus phones, there are instances where the left and right audio channels are being wrongly swapped around.
For the most part, this seems to be an issue that is mostly affecting the OnePlus 7 handsets, although some reports date back to the OnePlus 5. There also doesn’t seem to be a common denominator in what is causing the issue, as users who connect their headphones through a third-party dongle or an official accessory seem to be affected.
Unfortunately, there is no permanent solution to this problem. Some users are reporting that they are having some success by using media players that allow users to manually swap the channels, while others claim to have fixed the problem by rooting their phone. Hopefully with this problem gaining more attention, OnePlus will take a closer look at it and release a fix in the near future, because let’s face it, this is kind of embarrassing.
