Verizon’s OnePlus 8 won’t fit cases designed for T-Mobile or unlocked models

In the early days of the smartphone, we would see companies create versions of the same handset for different carriers. Nowadays, it’s pretty much a one-size-fits-all kind of deal, but that might not be true with the OnePlus 8.

It has been discovered by Redditor u/bud-dho that Verizon’s version of the OnePlus 8 will not fit cases designed for the T-Mobile version of the OnePlus 8 and the unlocked variants of the phone. This is because of the differences in the internal design of the components, where Verizon’s model has been made to support the carrier’s mmWave 5G network and has extra mmWave modules.

According to PhoneArena who analyzed the FCC documents for the handset, the extra modules can be found near the phone’s volume buttons. This meant that for Verizon’s model, OnePlus had to shift the volume buttons slightly. This difference is enough where it has resulted in the phone being incompatible with cases designed for other carriers.

We should note that this won’t affect all cases. If you have a OnePlus 8 case that has a very wide cutout for the volume rockers, then it could still fit, but if you’ve opted for a very fitted case which covers the volume buttons, then you could run into some issues. This is something you’ll want to take note of if you have yet to purchase a case for your phone.
