Earlier this month, due to concerns of the coronavirus outbreak, Google announced that the physical event of Google I/O 2020 will not be happening. Instead, the company suggested that they were working on alternative ways of hosting the event, like maybe done via online streaming.
This would mean that fans and developers would be able to tune into the event while at the same time maintaining social distancing. It sounded like a pretty good compromise, but it looks like that will not be happening anymore.
This is because Google has since announced on its I/O website that the event will not be taking place anymore this year, not in any capacity. This means that any hope of us being able to tune into the event via streaming has been dashed. Of course, this does not mean that Google will not announce anything, it’s just that you’ll now have to keep an eye out for press releases (or check Phandroid for updates) instead of being able to watch the announcements live.
Google adds:
“Right now, the most important thing all of us can do is focus our attention on helping people with the new challenges we all face. Please know that we remain committed to finding other ways to share platform updates with you through our developer blogs and community forums.”
In the meantime, other companies such as Apple are planning on going ahead with its own annual event, WWDC 2020, where they will be hosting it online and digitally. We’re not sure if the continued severity of the virus outbreak will force Apple to change their plans, but for now they’ll be sticking with it.
