Google applies for exemption to do business with Huawei

With Huawei being placed on the US Entity List, it means that they are not allowed to do business with US companies like Google, and vice versa. Both sides stand to lose as Huawei is the number two smartphone maker in the world, and losing their business is no doubt a huge deal.

Now according to reports, it seems that Google is eager to get back in business with the company and has reportedly filed for an exemption with the US government. For those who are unfamiliar, it is still possible for US companies to do business with those on the Entity List. They will need to apply for an exemption license, although whether or not this is granted is a different story.

That being said, while this sounds like potentially good news, remember that Huawei did previously say that they might not necessarily be so eager to get back in business with Google. We can’t say that we blame them entirely, after all, who’s to say that this won’t happen again? It makes sense that Huawei wants to prepare themselves for the eventually that maybe they might never be able to use Google’s services again.

The company has been busy finding alternatives to Google services like Google Maps, where they teamed up TomTom. It has also been reported that other Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have also been looking into an alternative to the Google Play Store lest this fate were to fall on them in the future as well.
