TCL’s concept phone has a slide-out display that turns it into a tablet
Phones that can be unfolded and transformed into a tablet is pretty much the basis of foldable phones these days. It is a pretty obvious approach, although given what we’re hearing and seeing about the durability of foldable displays, it might not necessarily be the best approach, at least with today’s technology.
TCL seems to have a slightly different approach, at least that’s according to CNET who have managed to get their hands on what appears to be renders of a concept phone that the company is working on. Instead of a phone that unfolds into a tablet, this is a phone that can slide-out, revealing a secondary display, and ultimately enlarges the screen to transform it into a tablet.
We’re not sure how this will work as we imagine that there will be a rather obvious line down the middle where the phone slides out (although the renders have conveniently done away with it). It is, however, an interesting concept because it could address some of the concerns that people might have over foldable displays and how fragile they appear to be.
TCL has declined to comment on the renders, although it seems that there is a good chance they might have elaborated more on this at MWC 2020, which they have pulled out of due to concerns over the coronavirus outbreak (the event itself has also since been cancelled).
Hopefully the company will have additional details to share in the near future, but in the meantime, what do you think of this concept? Is this something you could be on board with?
