Samsung’s second fordable smartphone could be 50% cheaper than the Galaxy Fold
The jury is still out when it comes to foldable display smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy Fold has gotten most of the attention since it’s currently the only device that you can actually buy, but Huawei and Motorola will soon be bringing their variants to market as well. Besides the fragility of foldable display technology, the main reason most people have been hesitant to buy into the idea is the cost. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold sells for $1979.99 here in the U.S. market, making it one of the most expensive mainstream smartphones we have seen in a very long time.
But fortunately, new technologies get cheaper in time. A new report published by The Korea Herald claims that Samsung’s 2020 foldable display smartphone will be significantly cheaper. The price of the phone will be around 1 million Korean Won or roughly $845 USD. At 1 million Won, the Galaxy Fold 2 (we’re not yet sure if that is the official name) would be 56% cheaper than the Galaxy Fold’s current 2.3 million Won price point in South Korea.
To put that price into perspective, Samsung would be selling a foldable-display smartphone for roughly the Samsung price as this year’s Galaxy S10. We’re not sure about you, but we definitely wouldn’t be opposed to picking up a foldable display smartphone at that price. The device in question is likely to have a clamshell design, similar to that of the new Motorola RAZR. In order to keep the price down, the Galaxy Fold 2 would likely use a mid-range processor ditch a few of the camera sensors (does a phone really need 6 cameras?) found on the current Galaxy Fold.
We’ll have to wait a few more months before the next Galaxy Fold is unveiled. There’s a good chance that Samsung will show off the new design at the Galaxy S11 launch in February, but we could see a dedicated Fold event if Samsung expects the next device to be a lot more popular than the original.
