Huawei Mate X finally has a launch date, but there’s a catch

For a brief period in time, it felt as though Huawei could beat Samsung to the punch in releasing a foldable phone. This was after Samsung had announced that they would be delaying the launch of the Galaxy Fold to work out some of the build and durability issues. But later, Huawei also announced that they too would be headed back to the drawing board.

Now that the Galaxy Fold has been launched, what about the Huawei Mate X? It looks like we now have a release date in sight, although it does come with an asterisk next to it. This is according to Huawei’s announcement at an event in Shenzhen where the company confirmed that the phone will be released on the 15th of November, 2019 where it will be priced at around 16,999 yuan, which is roughly $2,400 after conversion.

This release date, however, will only be for the Chinese market. This means that if you live outside of China, you won’t be able to buy the phone just yet. The company hasn’t offered up a release date for other markets, and in an email sent to CNET, a Huawei spokesperson was quoted as saying:

“Our strategy is based on carriers’ 5G roll out in different regions. So far, Huawei has made the Huawei Mate X available in the China market on Nov. 15. A global launch plan is under review.”
