Huawei may be revealing Hongmeng OS next week
There are a lot of conflicting reports about the operating system Huawei is developing behind closed doors. Some claim it’s a full on Android replacement, some say it’s made for IoT devices. Some say it’s not even close to launch, while others say it’s almost ready. It’s hard to know what’s true and what isn’t at this point.
However, the Chinese state run publication Global Times is claiming that Huawei will be revealing Hongmeng OS next week. The company is hosting a developer conference on August 9th and will allegedly be ready to launch on Honor TVs smartphones by the end of the year.
The report says that Huawei will launch a smartphone running the new OS in Q4 of 2019 alongside the upcoming Mate 30 series. But unlike the Mate 30, the Hongmeng-powered device will be targeted at the low end with a 2,000 yuan ($288 USD) price tag. Huawei expects to move up to several million units.
Whether this is true or not is hard to say, so we’ll have to wait until the announcement to find out how far along Hongmeng OS really is. Whether it can beat Android in the Chinese market isn’t really up for debate, but capturing other markets will be a challenge. Nonetheless, maybe more competition isn’t a bad thing.
