Stranger Things ad in the New York Times can only be decoded with Google Lens

Netflix is running an odd ad in the New York Times, featuring the Starcourt Mall from Season 3 of Stranger Things. The ad itself doesn’t reveal much on its own, but it comes to life once you load up Google Lens on your phone and point it at the ad. Netflix is hoping this unique ad will increase awareness of its already wildly popular show, but this is probably the most exposure Google Lens has received since launch.

Google’s Pixel phones and select device from other manufacturers have Google Lens built into their camera apps, but all other Android and iOS users can pull up Google Lens through Google Assistant or the Google app. Lens has quite a bit of functionality built into it, but we’re not exactly sure how often people actually remember to use it. Partnerships like his should help drive consumer awareness and show them how powerful Google AI-driven image recognition system actually is.
