Huawei Mate 30 Pro tipped to come with a 90Hz display

When Razer launched the Razer Phone with its 120Hz display, we had to wonder if this was trend that other companies would be hopping on board on. It turns out that it’s a much slower adoption than we would have liked, but we are slowly getting there. According to a recent report from Chinese website IThome, it seems that Huawei could be adopting a display with a faster refresh rate for its upcoming Mate 30 Pro handset.

For those unfamiliar, Huawei typically launches two flagship phones a year, with its P-series in the first half of the year, and the Mate series in the second half. Assuming the handset is still on track for a launch, the report claims that the phone might be using a 90Hz display. This is still not as fast as the Razer Phone’s 120Hz, but it puts it on par with other handsets like the OnePlus 7 Pro.

In addition to the display with a faster refresh rate, the report also claims that the phone will be powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 985 chipset and the HiSilicon Balong 5000 5G modem, meaning that the phone will have 5G capabilities. It is also rumored to sport a curved display and could have a hole-punch camera on the front for dual selfie cameras.

The question that we’re sure is one everyone’s mind is whether or not the phone will be powered by Android. Given that Huawei is now blacklisted by the US government and banned from doing business with US companies, it does put their use of Android and Google Play services in the future at risk. It has been suggested that Huawei is already preparing their own platform, which could be a fork of Android, but we’ll have to wait and see.

There is no doubt that hardware plays a role in helping our decisions when choosing a smartphone, but at the same time, the use of Android is also another part of the allure. Exactly how big of an impact this will have on Huawei remains to be seen.
