Andy Rubin teases new announcement from Essential

Andy Rubin, the founder of Android and later Essential, has something in store for us. His pet project, the Essential Phone, launched almost two years ago and we have heard shockingly little since then. There has been radio silence from the company, aside from assurances that something is in the works.

That doesn’t mean the company isn’t working hard though. The Essential Phone is still receiving monthly security updates on the same day as the Pixels, and it’s even part of the Android Q Beta rollout. So the team is hard at work supporting the original phone, and definitely working on something new.

All we’ve had are the cheeky tweets of chief of research and development Jason Keats for an insight into what is coming. Now we have confirmation from the man himself. Andy Rubin has tweeted that an announcement is coming.

We have little details outside of that, since even what type of device it is wasn’t discussed. Could it be an Essential Phone 2? Or maybe that smart home speaker the company was working on in the beginning? We’re wagering that it’s a new phone, and it’s about time. The Essential Phone was an amazing (but flawed) device and we can’t wait for another.
