The notch-killing in-display front-facing camera has arrived!

Not a fan of the notch? It seems that not many people are, which has resulted in companies such as Samsung to come up with alternative designs like the hole-punch display. It has also resulted in other companies creating popup and slideout camera systems, which while perfectly functional, still doesn’t feel quite right.

For those who still don’t think that such designs are “right”, not to worry because Oppo and Xiaomi have come up with solutions in the form of an under-display front-facing camera. Oppo was first to upload a video which was followed shortly after by Xiaomi.

Oppo VP Brian Shen, who posted the video on Weibo, acknowledged that they still had a lot of work to do as there is a loss in quality while shooting through the display. He is, however, optimistic that they will eventually be able to get it right.

”At this stage, it’s difficult for under-display cameras to match the same results as normal cameras, there’s bound to be some loss in optical quality. But, no new technology jumps to perfection right away.”

This means that this camera is capable of shooting through the display of the phone without any additional help, like a hole-punch, which let’s admit it, is just as bad as the notch. Now, before we get too excited at the thought of seeing it in phones in the near future, you should probably temper your expectations, but it is definitely something to look forward to in future handsets from either company.

It should be noted that Samsung had previously revealed that they too are working on similar technology, but we have yet to see a demonstration from them.
