Sony Xperia 1 will be going on sale July 12

Sony’s presence in the US market as far as smartphones are concerned has waned considerably over the years, but the company is still very much fighting the good fight. If you are interested in getting a new Sony smartphone, the company has announced that come 12th of July, the Sony Xperia 1 will be headed to the US.

For those who are hearing about the Sony Xperia 1 for the first time, the handset was announced earlier this year in February at MWC 2019. It is one of three flagship handsets that the company unveiled which includes the Xperia 10 and the Xperia 10 Plus. The phone is expected to be priced at $949.99 when it eventually goes on sale.

What caught our attention about the handset is the fact that it comes with a 4K OLED display. While Sony has attempted to introduce 4K displays to its phones in the past, this is the first “true” 4K display (previous models would switch between 4K and a lower resolution depending on the task at hand).

It also comes with a rather unique display aspect ratio of 21:9 which Sony is calling CinemaWide, which apparently makes it ideal to watch videos on. The end result is a phone that is kind of tall/long that resembles a remote control. Whether or not this is a good thing is entirely subjective, but it does look a bit odd.

Other than that, the Xperia 1 will come with the usual flagship hardware such as the Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a triple camera on the back consisting of a 12MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide sensor, and a 12MP zoom lens.
