5G Nokia smartphones will be coming this year

5G will be the next standard in mobile connectivity and this year and to no one’s surprise, more handset makers are jumping on board the bandwagon. We imagine that it probably won’t be too long before 5G becomes the norm, kind of like how 4G is at the moment. For those who are fans of Nokia and wouldn’t mind seeing a 5G Nokia handset, your wish could be granted.

Qualcomm has announced that they will be entering into a licensing agreement with HMD Global which would give the latter the ability to manufacture and sell 5G devices. According to Florian Seiche, CEO of HMD Global:

“We are driven by our unique promise of delivering phones that get better over time. In this, we work closely with best-in-class partners globally. Our collaboration with Qualcomm enables us to bring leading innovations to the market and deliver on our unique consumer promise.”

At the moment Nokia has yet to officially announce any 5G smartphones, but a report from earlier this year did suggest that Nokia could be launching a 5G variant of the Nokia 9 PureView later in the year. The handset was originally announced earlier in January and while the penta-camera was interesting, overall it was a bit disappointing especially given that the phone was still using 2018’s hardware.

The rumor claimed that the phone could launch later in the year with 5G and the use of the Snapdragon 855, and now this licensing agreement certainly lends some credence to those claims. Hopefully, the use of more modern hardware and 5G will make it a more compelling handset.
