The SanDisk Extreme 1TB microSD card is up for pre-order, but you shouldn’t buy it

One of the many reasons to stick with Android phones is the ability to add expandable storage rather than spending extra money on internal storage when purchasing a smartphone. Over the years, microSD card capacity has grown significantly. The original T-Mobile G1 supported memory cards up to 16GB, but many of today’s newer devices support the SDXC card format which will allow for cards up to 2TB. While that number is still theoretical, the SanDisk Extreme 1TB microSD card is now available for pre-order through SanDisk’s website and the card is expected to ship later this month.

While a 512GB microSD card costs about $115 these days, the SanDisk Extreme 1TB microSD card is listed at $449.99. That’s three times the price!

The good news is that the price should drop significantly within the next 12 months. The current selection of 512GB cards that are selling for $115 were going for $350 just 6 months ago and the 256GB microSD cards that sell for less than $40 made their debut at $150 in mid-2017. Other manufacturers will be offing 1TB microSD cards sometime this summer, but we’ll probably have to wait until the holiday season before we see the first big drop in price.
