You can now call your Google Home speakers with Duo

Google hasn’t made an official announcement yet, but the company is in the process of rolling out a new feature to its Google Home speakers which allows them to answer voice calls made to their through Duo, Google’s voice and video calling app. As of right now, the feature only appears to be enabled on select Google Home Mini speakers, with the new Duo calling feature only appearing when setting up the speaker for the first time or after a hard reset.

We have tried to test this on our own Google Home Mini with no success, but we have confirmed that it is working with several of our readers.

To use this new voice calling capability, you will need a smartphone with Google’s Duo app installed, but the call itself needs to be initiated through Google Assistant. Simply open the Google Assistant on your smartphone or tablet and say “Duo audio call “X” speaker” and the Google Assistant will ring the named speaker. To answer the call, users must tap the edge of the speaker or long-tap to decline the call.

As of now, it doesn’t look like there’s a way to place an outgoing call from the Google Home Mini to a Duo contact, but we’re going to assume that the feature is currently being worked on.

Since this feature is already out in the wild, we expect Google will be making an official announcement sometime this week.
