Xiaomi to release Transparent Edition of the Mi 9 with 12GB of RAM, upgraded camera

The Xiaomi Mi 9 hasn’t yet officially been unveiled, but the company’s CEO is working overtime to ensure that the new phone gets as much attention as the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 devices. In a post to Weibo, Lei Jun, revealed that Xiaomi will be offering a Mi 9 Transparent Edition which will feature a few unique characteristics.

At the name implies, the Xiaomi Mi 9 Transparent Edition will sport a transparent glass panel on the back of the phone which will allow you to peer inside. Like last year’s model, the “components” that are visible are simply a cover of what’s below them, but it’s still a very good look. Besides this unique design characteristic, the device will also come with 12GB of RAM an upgraded lens for its main camera which will feature a 7P lens with f/1.47 aperture rather than the 48MP 6P lens with f/1.75 aperture that will ship with the standard Xiaomi Mi 9. 

The post also revealed that the Xiaomi Mi 9 will sport Laser Autofocus, PDAF and CDAF with a closed-loop Voice Coil Motor (VCM). For its in-display fingerprint sensor, the Mi 9 will use a 5th-gen sensor which is 25% faster than 4th-gen sensors used on a lot of phones.

The display panel Xiaomi is sourcing for the Mi 9 will be coming from Samsung, featuring FHD+ resolution, 103.8% NTSC wide color gamut, and 600-nit brightness. Xiaomi will also be including a “Sunlight mode 2.0” mode which “improves contrast and optimizes color display” when the device is used in the sun. The display will also allow the phone to achieve a 90.7% screen-to-body ratio thanks to its smaller chin, teardrop notch and ambient light sensor, and an ultrasonic proximity sensor which are built into or underneath the panel.

It looks like Xiaomi is serious about taking on Samsung this year. It may not have a big presence in Europe yet, but the company is likely hoping that will change with the introduction of the Xiaomi Mi 9 this week.
