The display aspect ratio on our smartphones has changed over the years, where manufacturers are starting to adopt new dimensions and ratios that they think make for better displays. Come MWC 2019, Sony might have something new to share that we’re not sure if everyone might be able to appreciate.
In a tweet by Roland Quandt of WinFuture.de, he has shared renders of what appears to be an upcoming smartphone from Sony called the Xperia XA3. What makes this particular render interesting is that apparently Sony will be utilizing what they are calling a “CinemaWide” display which has an aspect ratio of 21:9. The end result is a smartphone that is tall and skinny, giving it a remote control-like design.
It is possible that having a wider display means watching movies and videos on it will be more enjoyable. It also makes the phone easier to grip. That being said, we have to admit that it does look kind of weird, and we also have to wonder about the structural integrity of a phone that is tall and skinny where it looks like it could be easily broken in half.
The Sony Xperia XA3 won’t be the only phone with a 21:9 display because earlier last month, we heard a report that Sony’s flagship Xperia XZ4 could also be packing a similar display. Sony is expected to officially unveil their new mobile products at MWC 2019 which kicks off in a couple of weeks, so we should know more by then. In the meantime what do you think of this design? Yay or nay?
This is (what I think is) the Sony Xperia XA3. And it's crazy. Because it apparently has a 21:9 screen. And no bezel at the bottom. And a huge forehead. https://t.co/lgdbtUjs7s
