OnePlus 6 and 6T bug results in horrendous audio capture for third-party apps

The OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T are two fantastic smartphones, but even the best devices can suffer from serious issues. After reports that the phones have been suffering from battery drain issues, users are now claiming that the two phones may be using the wrong mic when capturing audio with third-party applications like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApps and Snapchat.

Rather than using the main microphone to capture audio, the phones appear to be forcing quite a few popular third-party applications to use the secondary microphone which is intended for noise cancellation. The resulting audio that’s captured by these applications has a higher pitch and sounds quite distant as opposed the the richer audio quality that’s delivered through the phone while on a call of from the main camera app while recording video. Some are speculating that this issue may also be why many OnePlus 6 and 6T users have reported issues triggering the Google Assistant with the “Ok, Google” voice command.

While this bug appears to be affecting quite a few apps, Instagram appears to be immune to the issue. We’re not sure why Instagram isn’t experiencing the same issue as other applications, but there’s clearly a discrepancy that needs to be addressed.

OnePlus hasn’t officially acknowledged the issue, but we’re hoping users who have experienced it will speak up so that a fix can found. Since the bug doesn’t appear to be affecting all third-party applications, it should be quite easy to solve, but it might be  while before OnePlus is able to deliver the fix through a new software update.

If you’re noticed this issue on your OnePlus 6 or OnePlus 6T, let us know in the comments below.
