Snapdragon 855 benchmarks show massive improvements over the 845

Every year Qualcomm upgrades its chipsets with a new flagship that promises even better performance, better power management, and just better overall efficiency than ever. This year the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 platform will be the company’s flagship chipset which we expect will find its way into the majority of flagship phones for 2019.

Qualcomm previously boasted about the specs and features of the Snapdragon 855, but exactly how big of an improvement is it over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 845? According to recent benchmarks, it turns out that on average the Snapdragon 855 represents at least a 50% improvement over the Snapdragon 845.

The tests found that in terms of CPU, the Snapdragon 855 showed a 74% improvement over the 845. It also showed a 43% improvement in terms of the GPU, and a 55% in UX. Oddly enough, in terms of memory, it was about 7.5% slower than the 845. The single-core benchmark scores are also a 49% improvement, while its multi-core score was a 42% improvement.

It should be noted that the handset being tested was a reference design model and was being compared to a Pixel 3. This means that while these numbers are impressive, they mostly serve to tell us how well in theory this phone could perform. Should you buy a Snapdragon 855 smartphone based on these numbers?

Since flagships of 2019 will be packing the chipset, we don’t really have much of a choice, but these numbers don’t tell the whole story. Let’s not forget that the overall smartphone experience isn’t just about speed and numbers, but a combination of that along with other factors such as design, price, software, and so on.
