Samsung promises to deliver 5G smartphone in first half of 2019
So far it has been confirmed that Samsung will be working with the various major US carriers to launch a 5G smartphone. However, there is the lingering question of when? And could Samsung possibly be the first to the market with such a device? While the latter has yet to be answered, what we do know now is that Samsung does plan on launching the device in the first half of 2019.
This is according to a press release put out by Samsung in which they talk about a “journey of mobile innovation”, which is more like a look back on how far the company has come in terms of mobile technology. They also talk about the future and they also mention how 5G will play a part in it, and how they are aiming to launch their 5G smartphone in the next few months.
Samsung isn’t just changing how smartphones will look. It’s also changing how they’ll connect. We’re working hard to usher in the next generation of connectivity with 5G. Samsung has more 5G patents than any other company and was the first company to receive FCC approval for its 5G network equipment. Our technology brought 5G networking to South Korea, and in partnership with U.S. carriers, we’ve already brought the first wave of 5G to the United States. We’re committed to putting 5G in consumers’ hands with a 5G smartphone in the first half of 2019.
That being said, this statement from Samsung does seem to confirm some earlier rumors, which is that the 5G smartphone from Samsung will be separate from its Galaxy S10 (which is due to be announced next month). This move seems to be in line with other companies such as OnePlus who are also planning on launching a 5G smartphone separate from its current lineup.
However since 5G could take a couple of years before it is truly ubiquitous like LTE, maybe this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
