Pocophone F1 to get 4K, 60 FPS video recording update next month
Xiaomi’s Pocophone F1 was something of a dark horse in 2018. The phone came in at around $350 which is an outright steal when you compare it to the flagship phones released last year, all while featuring hardware specs that made it comparable to other high-end smartphones.
However its camera was found to be a bit lacking (as you can see in our Pixel 3 versus Pocophone F1 shootout), and we suspect that this could have been how the company managed to keep its costs down. There is some good news though because, according to a tweet by Poco India’s General Manager C Manmohan, an update for the phone is scheduled for next month that will improve on some of its camera functions.
This includes the ability to shoot video in 4K resolution at a very buttery smooth 60 FPS, and Widevine L1 certification. For those unfamiliar, Widevine L1 certification is required in order for Netflix videos to be played back in HD. The Pocophone F1 at the moment only has L3 certification.
It was also mentioned in the tweet that 960 FPS slow-mo video recording will be part of an update in the next couple of weeks, along with Night Mode. Whether or not this will help improve the rest of the phone’s photographic capabilities remains to be seen as we’ll have to wait for the update before we can test it out. However, for a $350 phone, color us impressed with the after-sales support that we are seeing.
And regarding 4K 60 FPS, we will be rolling it out in the stable update in February. We are working with our partners to also provide Widevine L1 certification.
