Google admits to the Pixel 3’s memory management issue, promises a fix ‘in the coming weeks’

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are among two of the best Android smartphones we’ve seen this year. While the cameras on the two phones are absolutely phenomenal, the devices suffer from lackluster performance due to poor RAM management. The good news is that Google has acknowledged the issue and has promised to fix it with an upcoming update.

The statement from Google didn’t specify why the issue wasn’t caught before the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL went to market, but it did promise that the fix would “keep background apps from being prematurely closed,” which should make a lot of Pixel 3 owners very happy.

We’re rolling out a software update in the coming weeks to keep background apps from being prematurely closed in certain situations.

Having used the Pixel 3 as my main device for several weeks now, I can say that the aggressive RAM management on the phone has been quite frustrating. While 4GB of RAM is more than enough to keep an Android phone running smoothly, the Pixel 3’s current RAM management has a tendency to kill off apps from the phone’s memory even while they’re being used. On more than one occasion, the music on my Pixel 3 has stopped while I was scrolling through Twitter and Android Auto has disconnected multiple times while in use in my car. Typically, a quick reboot can temporarily resolve the issue, but it’s not the type of experience you expect when you pay $800 or more for a smartphone.
