By now you already know it’s official. Android Wear is dead — well, in name only — with Google officially renaming the smartwatch platform to “Wear OS by Google.” Just like Android Pay, Google is seemingly distancing its products from the mobile operating system, probably in an effort to keep things simple.
The Wear OS rebrand is already hitting the Android Wear app and even a few Android Wear devices. While the list of devices that will receive the Wear OS update is almost no different from those already scheduled to receive Oreo (they’ve since added the recently released Skagen Falster and TAG Heuer Connected Modular 41), Google is providing a complete list so you’re not left wondering. Here’s the lineup:
Of course, there’s no ETA on exactly when you can expect the update to hit your Android Wear smartwatch. It’s entirely based upon the manufacturer of the watch. Google says the rollout will begin gradually over the next few days/weeks, so make sure your watch is charged and connected to WiFi.
