When Google announced that they’d be merging Android Pay and Google Wallet under a new “Google Pay” brand, the move just made sense to us. We never did quite see the point of handling peer-to-peer and Tap-to-Pay mobile payments in two separate apps, but then again it’s not unusual for Google to have multiple apps all trying to accomplish the same thing.
We still don’t know when the two services will officially merge, but some users are starting to find that all new Google Play branding popping up inside their devices already (Pixel 2 XL and Moto X Pure Edition). It’s reportedly being show under Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Default apps > Tap & pay. Selecting that option will normally show you Android Pay, but some users are reportedly seeing “G Pay” instead.
I’ve tried it on my own Pixel 2 XL with no luck in pulling up the new service, it’s still boring ‘ol Android Pay. Guess we’ll have to wait for something more concrete when it comes to release timing. It’s still not entirely clear if a new Google Pay app will need to be downloaded, or if Google will simply re-brand Android Pay or Google Wallet with the new moniker. Shouldn’t be long now.
