It’s always interesting to note how well new devices perform after Christmas since the holiday season is one of the biggest movers of new smartphones for the year. Analytics firm Localytics has analyzed the activations for several popular devices over this past Christmas weekend and they’ve determined that the Pixel 2 was the most popular device this year.
Both the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL beat out Apple’s newest iPhone X in terms of activations during this weekend, but it’s important to note that isn’t reflective of sales for any of these devices. Localytics makes this point themselves in their data, saying there are “far fewer active Pixel devices compared to the vast network of iPhone users.”
The analytics firm says promotions at Best Buy and Verizon definitely helped sales of the device, since the Pixel 2 could be had for as little as $15 a month. Google also ran a promotion of their own, in which they offered $100 Project Fi service credit with the activation of any Pixel XL, Pixel 2, or Pixel 2 XL device on the service.
It’s also interesting to note that Google saw a greater jump in activated devices this Christmas compared to Thanksgiving, with a jump from 12% in the days after Thanksgiving to 31% more in the days after Christmas.
