It’s that time of the year, where it seems that a new piece of information regarding Samsung’s upcoming flagship device is revealed on a daily basis, and sometimes even more frequently than that. Today’s the day where more information is coming out of the woodworks as MobileFun has listed cases for both the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus after Geekbench results shared some specs of the S9 Plus.
However, the biggest question about Samsung’s upcoming devices has been the design and whether the company would switch up the placement of the fingerprint scanner. While we may be another year away from seeing a scanner embedded into the display, it seems that Samsung will actually be listening to consumers on one aspect of the design.
Arguably the biggest complaint when it came to the Galaxy S8 lineup and Galaxy Note 8 was the placement of the fingerprint scanner. It was placed in-line with the camera module, making it annoying to access the scanner since you had to reach all the way across the device to hopefully get an accurate read.
Thanks to the case listings from Olixar on MobileFun, it seems this will be changed as Samsung will be moving the fingerprint scanner to the center of the device, placed directly below the camera module. This is the ideal placement for fingerprint scanners and will be a welcome design change in Samsung’s lineup of devices.
However, another annoying addition that made its way to the 2017 lineup of Samsung devices was the addition of the Bixby button, which was placed below the volume rocker on the left-hand border. It seems that Samsung will be sticking with this as the company continues to push Bixby as a viable alternative to both Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant.
On the bright side of things, these case listings confirm some of the rumors that have been making rounds regarding these devices. Samsung is planning to separate the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, and will be offering some better “specs” on the Galaxy S9 Plus. Most notably, we’ll be seeing a vertical-orientation for the dual-camera setup on the S9 Plus, while the standard Galaxy S9 will “only” feature a single rear camera.
It’s interesting to see that Samsung is opting for this layout after seeing a horizontal orientation on the Galaxy Note 8. But this is likely more to do with the placement of the fingerprint scanner than something that is fundamentally better for performance.
