Verizon’s move to unlimited plans has actually improved their network
Early this year, Verizon brought back unlimited data plans. This was a response to the other carriers that had brought back similar plans. However, in August Verizon rolled out two new “unlimited” plans that featured heavy throttling. Some argued that this was a response to the truly unlimited plan being a strain on the network. Turns out that couldn’t be more false.
Verizon CFO Matt Ellis was at a communications conference and he talked about why they created the two throttled plans. While he was talking about those plans, he admitted that unlimited plans have actually improved their network. Of course, users are using more data, but the data is spread out throughout the day. People aren’t saving their data for peak hours.
This makes a lot of sense. When you don’t have a limit there’s no need to be stingy. Instead of connecting to the slow WiFi at your office you can use LTE all day. Verizon’s two throttled plans are still not great, but maybe this discovery will convince Verizon to open them up more. Do you have a Verizon unlimited plan?
