Android Messages leaked screenshots show Smart Replies and new UI for attachments

There are a ton of options when it comes to sending SMS messages (standard text messaging) on Android. Although there are plenty of apps available on the Play Store, one of the best is Google’s own Android Messages app. The app offers a pretty bare bones experience but that’s sort of the appeal.

One area Google will work on bringing the app up to speed with their other services like Allo is with Smart Replies. We’ve seen them in Inbox, Gmail, Allo and soon, they’ll be making their way to Messages for your convenience. They’ve been referenced in leaks before, so it’s not entirely surprising. The feature has reportedly hit a group of early testers but there’s no telling when a broader rollout will take place.

It works the same way as everywhere else. When you receive a message, you’ll see 3 replies you can tap to respond with — no worrying about typing out text in the keyboard.

Google is also changing up the UI involved with sending message attachments. They’re now displayed in horizontal rows, which is different from the vertical UI you find on most other apps or platforms. It’s an interesting change, and sort of tidies things up a bit but you’ll have to decide for yourself whether or not it’s an improvement.

Keep in mind that because these changes are still only being tested, it’s possible they’ll never see the light of day. If or when they do begin rolling out to the public, we’ll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, you can download the app and get acquainted with it until then.
