Huawei has been steadily working on its presence here in the US, as we have seen a multitude of devices launched and accessories launched in recent years. However, as we near the announcement of the Huawei Mate 10, it seems that the company may have something else in store after new patent filings were discovered.
Huawei Honor VR Camera
According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Huawei has filed a patent for the “HUAWEI ENVIZION 360 PANORAMIC VR CAMERA”. This is likely to be different than the camera that was launched earlier this year under the Honor branding, but unfortunately, there’s no more information shared about the new camera in the patent filings.
Now, it’s important to note that Huawei has not been granted the patent (or trademark) yet, as the document states that the application “has been accepted” (on September 19th), but it is still “awaiting examination”. This is just a formality, but we can expect to see the new 360-degree camera approved and launched in the coming months, however it may not be until closer to CES 2018.
As for the description of the camera, the patent filing states that this is for “Panoramic cameras; lenses for cameras camera software for mobile phones and computers”. So maybe Huawei wants to jump into the market that Samsung has already been dominating with the Gear 360 thanks to the easy integration with its lineup of smartphones.
What will be interesting to see is how this new camera integrates with your smartphone. The aforementioned Honor VR camera simply attached to your phone through the USB Type-C charging port, but it would be pretty sweet to see a standalone option to truly take on the Gear 360 camera.
It would definitely be interesting to see some type of announcement made alongside the Huawei Mate 10, but we’ll have to wait until October 10th to find out for sure. So let us know what you think about this, and if you’d be interested to see a new 360-degree camera launched from Huawei.
