DxOMark revamps its smartphone camera scoring system

When a new phone is announced and the manufacturer really wants to boast about the camera, they often show off DxOMark scores. DxOMark is a website that rates cameras of all varieties, including smartphones. They first started rating phones cameras in 2012, but a lot has changed since then.

Smartphone cameras have gotten much more advanced since 2012. There’s a lot more to take into consideration when rating a camera nowadays. DxOMark has gathered data about how people use their phone cameras in 2017 to come up with a new scoring system. The new system should better reflect a modern phone camera and how it’s used.

The new scoring system includes a few key things. It measures the depth-of-field, which is the distance between the nearest and furthest objects. It also measures the zoom, tracking mowing subjects, and ultra low-light. These are all things that can set apart a good phone camera from a great camera.

DxOMark re-reviewed a number of smartphones with the revamped system today. There wasn’t a huge change in the ranking. The Pixel is now tied with the HTC U11 for the top spot (the U11 was previously in sole possession). Do you care about DxOMark scores?
