BlackBerry PRIV intro video

Sounds like the BlackBerry Priv won’t be getting updated to Nougat

The BlackBerry Priv made its debut back in 2015 running Android Lollipop before it was updated to Marshmallow in April of this year. It was BlackBerry’s first phone that made the switch to Android and it seems as though it won’t be getting the Nougat update, despite Android Oreo releasing last month.

Alex Thurber, the GM of BlackBerry Mobility Solutions, recently confirmed on a podcast that the BlackBerry Priv won’t be getting Android 7 Nougat. He says the Priv has already received one generational update and the effort required to get all carrier partners onboard with a major version release makes it nearly impossible to do.

That’s especially true when you consider the carrier side of things, as AT&T has publicly stated that the BlackBerry Priv was a poor performer on their network and that they’ve seen more returns of the device than they would have liked. Both carriers and manufacturers have to feel as though there will be some return on their effort and the BlackBerry Priv just wasn’t popular enough. That’s unfortunate, but BlackBerry has the BlackBerry KEYone to focus on now.
