It turns out that the Pixel 2 may “only” feature the Snapdragon 835

For the last few months or so, we have been hearing rumors regarding Qualcomm’s next flagship processor and how it could be featured in an array of devices slated to launch this Fall. The SoC in question was the Snapdragon 836, and it seems that those rumors have all been put to bed after two separate reports were released.

Quickly rewind to last year, when Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 821 as the successor to the SD820. The SD821 was then launched in the Pixel lineup, helped spark the launch of the OnePlus 3T, and was considered so powerful that LG used it in the LG G6.

However, the reality of the SD821 was that it was just a minor iteration, and not part of a regularly released schedule of processing chips from Qualcomm. While the Snapdragon 810 was launched in 2015 as a flagship processor, there was no minor iteration released until the full swing of the Snapdragon 820 arrived in 2016.

Now that we’ve got some history out of the way, let’s take a look at the two reports from XDA Developers and Android Police. Both of these reports claim that Qualcomm never had any plans to launch the Snapdragon 836 this year, stating that the SoC “simply does not exist”.

Both reports claim that although the SD836 does not exist, that does not mean that Qualcomm isn’t nearing the launch of its next flagship SoC. There are just too many unknowns regarding whether the next SoC will be the SD845, which is expected to be the 2018 flagship processor.

Finally, @evleaks decided to lend his two cents, while sharing that he still believes that the Pixel 2 lineup will be powered by the SD836, despite these latest reports. We are likely a month away from the launch of the Pixel 2 lineup, which gives us plenty of time to learn more ahead of the official launch.

Let us know what you think about these latest reports and if you’re excited to see what Google will be unveiling.
