Google’s follow ups to last year’s Google Pixel and Pixel XL are nearly upon us. Providing Google sticks to their usual release schedules, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL should be ready to make their debut sometime in October, only a few short weeks away.
In case you were looking new details surrounding the hardware, the boys at 9to5Google are helping out with a few tidbits of their own. According to their sources, they’ve managed to pin down most of the hardware, confirming many of the specs we’ve heard previously, while providing new information as well.
Firs off, don’t expect the new Pixels to compete on price where they could be slightly more expensive than previous year’s models. This could have something to do with there being no reported 32GB model, only 128GB and 64GB — which could become the new base model.
This was all that was left of a leaked render after carefully blurring out identifiable information
Confirming earlier rumors, new sources are claiming the smaller Pixel — codenamed “walleye — will be ditching the 3.5mm in favor of front facing speakers. This, unfortunately, means the 4.97-inch 1080p display wont look quite as impressive as the larger LG-made Pixel 2 XL, with the smaller HTC-made Pixel featuring thick, black bezels to accommodate the new speaker setup. Of course, a dongle will be included in the box, for those that really need a 3.5mm to jack into.
Both devices are also said to feature IP68 water/dust resistance and come equipped with a Snapdragon 835 (apparently the 836 was debunked and probably wont happen). As for the rest of the specs, expect identical specs (with the exception of the displays), with the Pixel 2s coming still relying on Google’s improved EIS, laser auto focus, and featuring an always-on ambient display, Google Lens and Android 8.1 out of the box.
There also seems to be a PR embargo for accessories manufacturers that lifts on October 5th, so it’s possible we could see the devices launch — or at least revealed — at that time.
