Nokia (well, HMD Global, technically) is knocking it out of the park when it comes to software support for their Android phones. They’ve shown an excellent track record for security updates so far (oh look, the Nokia 5 is already getting September’s edition), and now it’s time to see what they’re planning for the next major platform upgrade.
HMD has confirmed that all Nokia devices are slated to receive Android 8.0 Oreo. That includes the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6, and Nokia 8. The news comes from chief product officer Juho Sarvikas. We’ve actually heard this back in June before we even knew the name for Android O, so it’s nice to see that their tune isn’t changing now that they’ve actually gotten their hands on the code.
It’s pretty impressive that even the Nokia 3 will get the goods, what with its 2GB of RAM and entry-level MediaTek chipset being. We’re not sure whether that’s a testament to its hardware or Oreo’s optimization, but we’re happy for it no matter what powers at be would allow it to happen.
Of course, the promise of an update alone is easy. The hard part is actually getting it done, and getting it done in a timely manner. This will be HMD’s first big test in that regard, so we’re watching them with eyes of a hawk.
