YotaPhone is back with a new AMOLED and e-ink Android phone

We’ve been big fans of the YotaPhone over the years. If you’re not familiar, the YotaPhone is an Android device with two displays. One regular display and a second e-ink display on the back. There have been a couple iterations of this concept, most recently the YotaPhone 2 at CES 2015. Yota is back again with another attempt.

The YotaPhone 3 has the same concept as previous models, but with much-improved specs. The main display is now 5.5-inches, 1080p, and Samsung Super AMOLED. The rear display is 5.2-inches of e-ink. Other specs include 3,300 mAh battery, 13MP camera, USB Type-C, and fingerprint scanner.

Where the device struggles to move the needle is in performance. It has a Snapdragon 625 processor and 4GB of RAM. Not terrible by any stretch, but certainly in the mid-range field. However, the display on the back is what makes this phone interesting. The e-ink display makes for a perfect e-reader and it’s great for widgets and other things that don’t require the full display.

The YotaPhone 3 will be sold in Russia and China starting in September. They did say it will come to other markets, but we don’t know what those markets will be. It will cost around $600.
