Lenovo is ditching their god-awful Vibe UI for something closer to stock Android
We don’t see too many Lenovo handsets launch here in the states. Well, if you don’t consider the Lowe’s exclusive Lenovo Phab 2 Pro or the Lenovo’s Motorola branded Moto line.
When we have run into Lenovo’s handsets — whether at trade shows like CES or MWC — the usually feature some pretty nice hardware marred only by a horrible software experience. Lenovo calls it their Vibe UI and it’s arguably one of the worst Android skins you can find on a smartphone. But it seems Lenovo could be wising up.
The Chinese manufacturer announced today that they’re officially doing away with the Vibe UI, offering a more traditional stock Android UI on their devices. Before you get too excited, this only applies to one of their key markets: India.
Lenovo’s head of mobile product marketing for India said they have been mulling over the decision for the past 11 months and after gauging feedback from consumers, decided to pull the plug on Vibe UI.
In theory, this could help speed up major Android updates on Lenovo’s devices (something I’m sure they were never too keen on) and while this could help reduce Android fragmentation — I’m not holding my breath. But hey, using a more stock Android UI certainly can’t hurt things, can it?
