Samsung is at SID this week showing off their latest display innovations. The company brought with them the world’s first 9.1-inch stretchable AMOLED panel.
The display is built on LTPS technology with full support for multi-touch sensors. It’s a really thick panel at about 10mm, but that’s OK for now: it’s not meant to go inside your next tablet or anything.
In fact, we’re not exactly sure what it will be used for. It can take on almost any shape imaginable thanks to its ability to be formed in both convex and concave forms, with applications like a display-infused jacket being trumpeted to help illustrate its flexibility.
Samsung likely has a lot of work ahead of them to get this thing to market, especially if their smaller phone-bound stretchable OLED panels are anything to go by. But it seems like they’re once again at the edge of the innovation bubble in the display market with this new panel, and that’s the kind of stuff that has earned them the title “King of OLED” up against all the rest.
