Sony plans to discontinue the Xperia X and Xperia X Compact

It’s not every day that you see someone around you using a Sony Xperia smartphone, and the chances of that happening are about to get a bit smaller. During its 2017 Investor Day, Sony gave everyone a look at its plans for the future, which don’t include the Sony Xperia X or Xperia X Compact.

This is part of Sony’s plans to drop its ‘Premium Standard’ lineup, which aimed to give users great devices at a budget price point. Unfortunately, the lineup didn’t really hold up to its expectations as Sony saw volume targets of just 31% outside of Japan, compared to 85% within the country.

Instead, Sony confirmed plans to strengthen its focus on its flagship lineup with the Xperia XZ Premium and its mid-range lineup, which includes the Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra. Sony also confirmed it plans to put more focus into regions where Xperia devices are thriving, while attempting to figure out how to properly enter the US market in a bigger capacity.

Considering that Sony is continuing to struggle against the likes of LG, Samsung, and others, this move comes as no surprise. The company needs to regroup and focus on the future if it wants to make more of an impact moving forward.
