Lenovo confirms the Moto Z2 Play will feature a smaller battery

Over the last month, we have been slowly learning more and more about the successor to the popular Moto Z Play. The Moto Z2 Play has been leaked a quite a few times, but it seems we are nearing a launch as the device has passed through China’s TENAA certification. Not only did we see the device in all its glory via TENAA, but Lenovo has confirmed what many of us feared the most regarding the Z2 Play.

Previous rumors have stated that the Moto Z2 Play will feature a battery of around 3,000mAh, which is substantially smaller than the 3,510mAh battery featured in the 2016 Z Play. This has left many folks looking for a new mid-range device, scratching their heads.

It seems that these rumors have been confirmed thanks to the TENAA listing, as well as Lenovo confirming the news via Twitter. Starting with the TENAA listing, we now know that the Z2 Play will feature a 5.5-inch FHD OLED display.

The device will also be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 626 SoC, along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. The front camera for the device will feature a 5MP sensor, with a 12MP main shooter found on the rear of the device.

It’s obvious from the TENAA listing that Motorola and Lenovo wanted to create a thinner device, but personally, I think they are really missing the mark here. They had a good thing going with both the flagship Moto Z and the budget-minded Z Play, and it looks as though they are trying to blend the two options.

What is a bit curious about the TENAA listing is that it shows a 2,820mAh battery, while Lenovo’s Twitter account claimed the device includes a 3,000mAh battery. This could just be a case of the representative “rounding up” on the number, but they did confirm that the battery would not be removable.

Regardless, we’re likely to continue learning more about the Moto Z2 Play and the rest of the Moto Z2 lineup in the coming weeks. Let us know what you think about this latest set of leaks regarding the Z2 Play and if you’ll be looking elsewhere due to the smaller battery.
