Hands-on: ASUS ZenFone AR with Tango [VIDEO]

We’ve known for awhile that ASUS was planning on launching a Tango smartphone. They announced the ASUS ZenFone AR all the way back in November of last year, and they were actually showing it off back during CES 2017 in January. It’s been awhile since we last saw it, so we figured we’d check in with the phone to see what kind of progress ASUS and Google have made here at Google I/O 2017.

Now, I’ll admit. I was ready to write this phone off as another Lenovo Phab 2 Pro dud (that phone was only sold in Lowes stores), but then news broke today that ASUS would be selling the ZenFone AR at Verizon, the single largest carrier here in the US. That, of course, isn’t enough to guarantee it will be a mainstream success, but it puts the phone — as well as Google Tango — in a very promising position.

ASUS ZenFone AR hardware specs

The ASUS ZenFone AR comes equipped with a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 6GB or 8GB RAM, and a 23 MP camera. The phone also features a “vapor cooling system” to ensure the phone doesn’t overheat while engaged in VR and/or AR activities as it’s the first smartphone to support both Google Daydream and Tango platforms.

The ASUS ZenFone AR will launch this summer and while pricing hasn’t been announced, it’s been said that the phone will be priced aggressively. All that being said, I have to ask: anyone have their eye on the ZenFone AR?
