The world of virtual assistants and smart home hubs is getting crowded these days. The latest device, called Lighthouse, is from Andy Rubin’s Playground Studio. If you’re new to the Android scene, Andy Rubin is the creator of Android and former head at Google. Lighthouse is his company’s latest venture.
Lighthouse uses a combination of fancy tools to understand exactly what’s happening in your home. It has a 3D sensor, video camera, computer vision, and deep learning. Lighthouse can tell the difference between you and your pets, but also the difference between you and other humans.
Since Lighthouse can recognize specific things, you can ask specific questions. For example, you could ask “what did the kids do with the babysitter?” Lighthouse knows who the babysitter is and will play video from when they were in your house. Lighthouse can also notify you when your kids get home from school, or when an unrecognized person enters your home.
Lighthouse is available for pre-order right now for $399. The device will ship in September. It will also include one year of the Intelligence Plan, which will cost $10 per month afterward. All of that sounds pretty pricey compared to the Amazon Echo or Google Home, but Lighthouse is doing some very impressive stuff. Are you interested?
