Samsung’s Gear VR continues to dominate the market

A new report by SuperData Research states that the Samsung Gear VR was by far the most popular VR headset sold in Q1 2017. The report, which only accounts for units sold and not units shipped to retailers, shows that Samsung sold 782,000 units across the globe in Q1 2017.

Coming in second was the Sony PlayStation VR with 375,000 units sold, and Google’s Daydream View finished the quarter with 170,000 units sold. Rounding out the top 5 were the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift which saw 95,000 and 64,000 units sold, respectively.

These numbers aren’t all that surprising considering the fact that Samsung markets the Gear VR all of the time, while making them easily accessible to those who purchase Samsung devices. However, it’s unknown if the “giveaway” numbers are included in the sales totals.

While we would like to see someone else enter the “affordable” VR headset market, there would be a lot of catchup work to do. Let us know in the comments below what headset you use and whether you’re considering purchasing one for yourself.
